The life she leads and the people she meets. The political atmosphere she faces in some of the colleges is quite difficult. She is a white woman teacher teaching black students. While reading, you feel like you are walking right beside the writer as she encounters the wide variety of people, cultures, places, and wildlife that make up the rich diversity of the country. The title, “Hippos, Hotspots, and Homelands,” aptly summarizes this complex land. The music teacher author’s several teaching locations provide the opportunity to sense the different traditions, languages and temperaments of each community. The ever-present wild creatures offer unexpected incidents, sometimes fun and sometimes fearful. While there are joys, like student’s families dancing down the aisle at graduations, and the author’s attainment of a PhD, there is also the terror of tragic events, as the country emerges from Apartheid. I was captivated by the adventures of the writer and her insight into the customs and culture of the region. Not only informational, but filled with humorous incidents along her journey.
